Welcome to GeMMS!

I think of it as Gene's Mac Mud Server, but I'm sure you will think of it as The General Mac Mud Server. :-)

History

GeMMS is a project that I've worked on -- in concept anyway -- since around 1999. The original concept was to create a distribute MUD that was 100% Java™. I gradually realized that even the most popular MUD that I'd seen rarely had more than 250 users at any given time. An enterprise MUD is not really needed.

Then came my great love for OS X. I decided that another choice for MUD hosting on Macs would not be a bad thing, and I'd get to use my beloved OS. I hooked up with sourceforge and the rest is ancient history. (In computer years that is!)

What is missing?

Currently MUD servers on the mac are missing easy gui tools. Why should setting up a world need to require programming skills? It doesn't hurt to allow the Java enabled to write code, but let's provide tools for the average drag-n-drop junkie. The tools I'm thinking of currently are drag and drop rooms, monsters, items and treasure. Gui navigation of the terrain and sub maps. Preference and the stopping and starting of the server should also be doable from the gui. Suggestions are accepted. So, if you have always dreamed of a gui feature, name it!

Another thing, ... I hate "void". Let's ship with at least one pre-built world to play in/with. It will serve as an example to potential admins.

Time frame

I'm in no hurry. I'm also a picky person when it comes to design. All successful projects must be well designed with thorough documentation. I will be doing the first round(s) of documentation myself. It will use lots of UML. I will also do the first few prototypes myself. Their purpose will be to show the concept to potential users as well as potential programmers.
